LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's volleyball dropped its fourth-straight SCIAC match, but picked up its first set in conference play, losing 3-1 to Caltech. The set scores were 25-27, 25-20, 24-26, 21-25.
Â
It was a close one all the way through as the Tigers had late leads in the first three sets as Oxy was the first to 24 in each frame. In the first trailing 23-20, the Tigers rattled off four-straight points.
Anna Curtis-Revelle and
Aniya Hawthorne notched kills in the run. Caltech won four of the next five points to win set one.
Â
The second set was some of the Tigers best volleyball of the season, hitting .265 with 15 kills. They led by as many as seven and were capturing momentum. Hawthorne notched a booming kill just outside the ten-foot line that sent Rush Gym in a frenzy.
Â
The third set played out like the first, a back-and-forth affair, with a big Tiger run to force set point. The Tigers' inability to close gave Caltech a 2-1 advantage.
Â
The Beavers took care of business in the fourth. After Oxy tied the set at 20, Caltech rattled off a 5-1 run to end the match, picking up its first SCIAC victory.
Eliana Channell led all players with 12 kills.
Ariana Carranza added 10.
Meara Hayes posted a game-high 26 assists and Hawthorne and
Katelyn Cajigas teamed up for five blocks apiece.
Â
With the loss the Tigers fell to 3-8 on the season and 0-4 in SCIAC play. They'll look to bounce back at Whittier on Tuesday, October 8.
