Los Angeles, CA — Oxy men's water polo team hosted the Chapman Panthers on Wednesday night, looking to avenge an 11-12 loss they suffered to the Panthers on the road earlier this season.Â
The Tigers came out firing, with Zane Derrod getting Oxy on the board first with a goal, followed by a beautiful no-look backhand goal from Travis Hughes to make the lead 2-0.Â
At the end of the 1st quarter, Oxy goalie Jack Schroeder would make saves on two Chapman five-meter penalty attempts to preserve a 5-4 Oxy lead heading into the 2nd period. Hughes and Derrod would combine for the Tigers first 7 goals of the game, with 5 of them coming from Hughes and 2 of those 5 coming to start the 2nd period.
Jacob Carlson, Danny Miller, and Oliver Wilkins would score back to back to back goals to get Oxy's lead to 10-6 before Hughes scored once again to make it 11-6. The Panthers responded with 3 straight goals of their own to get back in the game, but Travis Hughes scored his 7th goal of the half to end the 2nd period at a score of 12-9 Oxy.Â
The Panthers got the deficit down to just 2 goals heading into the 4th and final period, and would outscore Oxy 3 goals to 1 in the 4th to force OT. After Chapman scored the first goal of OT, Tate Miller responded with a goal to even the score back up at 18.
However, Chapman would score two more goals in the first OT period, and add on two more in the second OT period to win by a score of 22-18.Â
Oxy's next match up will come at home on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, as the team will honor their seniors before the game against Whittier.
