Oxy's Big 2nd Half Leads to Win Over Sagehens

Los Angeles, CA— The Occidental women's basketball team hosted the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in Rush Gym on Wednesday night. 

The start of the 1st quarter was back and forth as there were 7 lead changes in the first 4 and half minutes of the game. Oxy went on a small 4-0 run with layups from Michelle Lagunas-Monroy and Toni Thompson to take a 14-9 lead. 

A 6-0 run to end the quarter that included layups from Amaia McCoy and Micah Elegores had Oxy up by 9 before Pomona responded with a score to make it 20-13 at the end of one quarter. The Tigers jumped out with a 4-0 run to start the 2nd quarter with a layup from Ainsley Shelsta and a made jumper from Paige Yasukochi. 

Dara Tokeshi made two layups on back to back Oxy possessions and the second layup putting Oxy up 28-19. Pomona had the lead down to 5 points before a Thompson layup and a layup from Gabriela Etopio stretched the lead back up to 9 points. The 2nd quarter would come to a close with Oxy up by a score of 36-29.

Toni Thompson and Ainsley Shelsta would take over offensively for the Tigers in the 3rd quarter, scoring 8 points each. A layup from Lagunas-Monroy had Oxy up by 16 points with 3 minutes to go in the quarter and the Tiger lead would be 58-41 heading into the 4th quarter. 

The Sagehens would fail to get the lead under 10 points in the 4th quarter and the Tigers would go on to win by a score 75-53. Toni Thompson had another double double in this game with 23 points and 15 rebounds, including 5 offensive rebounds. 

Ainsley Shelsta had 16 points and 6 rebounds and Gabriela Etopio was 4-8 from the field and scored 8 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Dominique Cabading had 4 assists and 5 steals and Paige Yasukochi had 6 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. 

The Tigers win gives them a SCIAC record of 11-4 on the season and they will look to close the regular season strong in their next matchup with the University of Redlands Bulldogs on Saturday, February 17th.
