Los Angeles, CA – In their last non-conference game of the season, the Occidental Tigers faced off against the Willamette Bearcats on March 27th in Jack Kemp Stadium. Jack Kemp Stadium, the home of the Tigers, was packed with fans that came to watch the friendly match-up. The final score was 19-9 Bearcats.
The first quarter was extremely close as the Tigers and Bearcats traded goals, ending the period 7-6 Willamette. Two of Occidental's six goals were scored by sophomore midfielder, Maeve Moylan. Throughout the game, Moylan made her mark on the field as one of the main forces for both the Tigers' offense and defense. She had eight draw controls, two ground balls, and two turnovers. As the Tigers solidify their gameplay for the rest of the season, Moylan has become a central component of Occidental's team. During this game, Moylan was in possession of the team's "slay of the day" ball, which gets awarded to a different player after every game. Moylan received this ball from the previous winner after her stellar performance against Redlands University a week prior.
Alongside Moylan, junior attack Gabriella Acker scored two goals for the Tigers: one off of a free position shot in the first quarter and the other off of a drive in the fourth quarter. Overall, a third of the Tigers' goals were assisted and Acker was the only Tiger to sink a free position shot. The remaining five goals were off of strong drives within the critical scoring area.
In regards to the "gritty" stats, those which require effort and play-making in the midfield, senior attacker and captain, Halle Knutson, earned the most ground balls for the Tigers (3) with Moylam, Acker, and first-year defender Evie Kim behind her with two each. Moylan is joined by junior midfielder Ella Skoglund with the most caused turnovers (2). While Moylan also leads in draw controls for the Tigers, she could not have had so much success without the help of her draw team; in particular, Kim (who had four draws) and sophomore midfielder, Ellie Mahoney (who had five draws). Occidental won 19 of the 31 draw controls in the game (approximately 61%). Stats like these showcase how hardworking the Tigers' are in the midfield and give the team pride regardless of the final score.
The Tigers would like to thank the Bearcats for traveling across state lines for a second time in just three years to play them in Los Angeles.
