LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Men's soccer's late-game heroics propelled them past the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens to remain undefeated in SCIAC play on Wednesday, September 25, to the tune of a 3-2 victory.
Â
The Tigers faced a 2-1 deficit heading into the 70
th minute, but a
Vicente Navarro equalizer – on a beautiful through ball from
Andrew Notter and
Eddie Siladie – and an
Oury Diane game-winning header off a
Charlie Miller cross, gave the Tigers a late lead and third conference win.
Â
Oxy got on the board first. In the seventh minute,
Ayden Rieke-Wey scored on a header goal off an
Aiden Aley cross. The Aiden-to-Ayden connection marked Rieke-Wey's first career goal.
Â
With the score standing pat for much of the first half, the Sagehens snuck in their first goal of the night, then followed it up early in the second half gaining their lone lead of the match.
Â
The game was a patent chippy SCIAC contest with seven yellows, three on the Tigers and four on the Sagehens, but none resulted in scores.
Â
With the victory, Occidental improved to 5-1-1 on the season and 3-0 in SCIAC play. Pomona-Pitzer fell to 2-3-2 and 0-2-1 in conference matchups.
Â
The Tigers return to the pitch this weekend, Saturday, September 28, when they host the Redlands Bulldogs in a 2023 SCIAC Championship rematch.
