Bening nets two goals as men's soccer draws with CMS

LOS ANGELES — Occidental College and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps played to a 3-3 draw on Saturday at W.C. Patterson Field at Jack Kemp Stadium. The Tigers overcame an early deficit with two first-half goals, but the Stags equalized in the second half. Both teams struggled to capitalize further, with the home team managing 16 shots to the visitors' 9. Each goalkeeper made two saves to maintain the deadlock.

The first half commenced with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking an early lead as John Laidlaw scored in the second minute. Occidental quickly responded in the eighth minute when Devin Bening, assisted by Elijah Edelman, netted an equalizer. Just three minutes later, Laidlaw restored the lead for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Occidental maintained their offensive pressure, and Bening struck again in the 15th minute to level the score at 2-2. Despite several fouls and shots from both sides, neither team could gain a further advantage by the end of the half. The teams entered halftime tied at 2-2.

The second half began with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking an early lead when Ben Bacdayan scored with assistance from Paxton Greene in the 48th minute, putting the visitors ahead 3-2. The Tigers responded tenaciously, with Ayden Rieke-Wey leveling the match at 3-3 in the 56th minute, assisted by Matthew Shea. Both teams continued to exchange opportunities, with Casey Scott making a key save to keep the score tied.

As the half progressed, Occidental's defense faced pressure following a red card issued to Shea in the 73rd minute, reducing the team to ten players. Despite this setback, the Tigers maintained their defensive resolve, with multiple shots on goal by Vicente Navarro and Rieke-Wey. The half concluded with the score remaining tied at 3-3, demonstrating the team's resilience under challenging circumstances.
