REDLANDS, Calif. — Occidental College fell to the University of Redlands in straight sets on Tuesday night at Currier Gym, with scores of 16-25, 20-25, 20-25. The Tigers' attack was led by a strong second set, hitting .267 with 11 kills.
Occidental began the first set on the serve but quickly fell behind as the Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead with effective kills from Cecily Wagstaff and Makenna Vanhofwegen. The Tigers responded with a kill by
Corinne Van Haeren, but the Bulldogs maintained momentum, extending their advantage to 6-1.
Occidental managed to close the gap with a series of points, including back-to-back kills by
Jasmine Shum from assists by
Kendall Taylor, narrowing the score to 10-8. However, Redlands regained control, capitalizing on the Tigers' errors and service aces to build a 20-10 lead.
The Tigers attempted a late rally with contributions from Van Haeren and a service ace by
Ariana Carranza, reducing the deficit to 24-16. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs secured the set 25-16 with a final kill by Emily Kitchin, concluding the set with a substantial lead.
Occidental faced a challenging second set as Redlands gained early momentum. Carranza and
Lila Payne connected for a kill to tie the score at 1-1, but the Bulldogs responded with a series of successful plays, including a service ace and multiple kills, pushing the score to 7-2. The Tigers called a timeout to regroup but faced a steady attack from Redlands, who extended their lead to 13-4.
Despite the Bulldogs' pressure, the Tigers showed resilience with Carranza and
Anna Curtis-Revelle recording important kills, supported by a service ace from
Eyleen Sanchez. This effort trimmed the deficit to 19-12. Occidental continued to fight, with contributions from
Jasmine Shum and
Eliana Channell, narrowing the gap to 21-18.
In the closing moments, a kill by Carranza brought the Tigers to 24-20, but Redlands secured the set with a final kill, taking it 25-20.
Occidental began the third set by quickly equalizing against the Bulldogs, with Van Haeren delivering a kill assisted by Payne. Shum added another point, giving the Tigers a brief lead before Redlands responded to level the score. Curtis-Revelle regained the lead with a kill, but the Bulldogs went on a 4-0 run, aided by an ace from Lily Kautai, to pull ahead 7-4.
After a timeout, Carranza's kill narrowed the margin to 11-6. Occidental rallied with a series of points, including a service ace by Payne and a block from Carranza and Curtis-Revelle, closing the gap to 14-11. However, Redlands responded with a solid offensive stretch, extending their advantage to 19-11.
The Tigers continued to fight back with contributions from Van Haeren and Carranza, cutting the deficit to 23-18. Despite a service ace from Payne that pushed the score to 24-20, the Bulldogs secured the set with a final kill by Kaitlyn DeLong, concluding the set at 25-20.
