Rodriguez's impressive showing not enough in 1-0 loss

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Cal Lutheran secured a 1-0 victory over Occidental on Wednesday at W.C. Patterson Field. A decisive goal in the second half, despite six saves by Tigers' keeper Melanie Rodriguez, proved enough for Cal Lutheran to clinch the win. The Tigers managed four shots but couldn't find the back of the net.

The match began with Occidental holding firm against Cal Lutheran's early pressure. Rodriguez made key saves, including two from Riley Cardenas, maintaining a scoreless start. Despite multiple corner kicks by Cal Lutheran, the Tigers' defense remained resilient. Cal Lutheran applied pressure all game, dominating on the offensive half, outshooting the Tigers 16-4..

Occidental gained momentum late in the half with offensive pushes from Sophia Weigt and Haley Jacobson, creating scoring opportunities. As the half closed, the score remained 0-0, with both teams looking to capitalize on their chances in the second period.

The second period began with Occidental attempting to shift momentum, as Malia DeCastro and Bella Calemine each took shots early on. Calemine's shot sailed wide, while Cal Lutheran's Olivia Suarez found the net in the 52nd minute, assisted by Hana Sawan, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The goal came off a costly Tiger foul, resulting in the free kick opportunity.
