Women's soccer defeats Whittier, clinches first SCIAC tournament berth since 2021

WHITTIER, Calif. — Occidental defeated Whittier 2-0 on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. Occidental's offense took control with 17 shots, including 12 on target, while their defense, led by the goalkeeper with five saves, secured a shutout. The victory was highlighted by Occidental scoring in each half, maintaining pressure on Whittier throughout the match. Whittier managed 13 shots but failed to convert any into goals.

The first half began with both teams competing for control, but Occidental gained momentum in the 19th minute when Mia Steadman scored the opening goal, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Tigers maintained pressure throughout the period, with multiple shots on goal, including attempts by Malia DeCastro and Zakrie Smith, though neither found the net. Melanie Rodriguez remained solid in goal, making key saves to preserve the lead. The half concluded with Occidental ahead 1-0.

The second half began with a shift in momentum as the Poets pressured early, but Rodriguez's goaltending, including a key save against Vivian Martinez, kept their scoring at bay. Occidental responded with a series of offensive efforts, highlighted by a goal in the 81st minute by Bella Calemine, assisted by Allison Bello, extending their lead.

Throughout the half, Whittier struggled to convert opportunities, despite multiple shots, with Rodriguez making critical saves. In the closing minutes, the Tigers maintained their advantage, concluding the half with a solid 2-0 lead.
