CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer (10-13, 5-8 SCIAC) defeated Occidental (4-15, 2-9 SCIAC) in four sets on Tuesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium, with set scores of 25-22, 26-24, 21-25, and 25-15.
Occidental opened the first set facing an initial surge from Pomona-Pitzer, who quickly established a 5-0 lead through effective serving and attacking.
Corinne Van Haeren provided a crucial breakthrough with a kill, supported by
Lila Payne's setting, to put Occidental on the scoreboard.
Jasmine Shum contributed with consecutive kills to narrow the gap, and the team capitalized on Pomona-Pitzer's errors, eventually leveling the score at 10-10.
Occidental briefly took the lead at 12-10 with
Sloane Shoop's kill, supported by
Kendall Taylor's setting. Despite back-and-forth play, Pomona-Pitzer regained momentum, pulling ahead 19-16.
Ariana Carranza's offensive efforts, combined with defensive plays from
Anna Curtis-Revelle and Carranza, kept the visitors close. However, Pomona-Pitzer managed to close the set with a service error from Occidental, maintaining their narrow advantage to win the set 25-22.
Occidental initiated the second set with a strong defensive play, as
Corinne Van Haeren and
Abby Werbel combined for a block to take an early lead. Payne's service ace extended the advantage, but Pomona-Pitzer responded with a series of points, shifting momentum and taking a 5-2 lead.
Occidental fought back with Shum and Carranza delivering key kills, leveling the score at 10-10. The teams traded points, with Taylor setting up effective plays, allowing Occidental to stay within reach.
In the closing stages, Shoop and Carranza delivered crucial kills to tie the score at 24-24, pushing the set into extra points. However, Pomona-Pitzer secured the final two points, closing the set with a narrow 26-24 victory.
Occidental began the third set with a pivotal highlight as Carranza delivered a kill to tie the score at 1-1. Shum came through with back-to-back kills, helping to keep the score tight at 2-2 and 3-2. Despite some errors, Occidental maintained momentum with contributions from Curtis-Revelle and Shoop, resulting in a close contest with the score tied multiple times.
As the set progressed, Occidental pulled ahead with a sequence of kills from Van Haeren, Werbel, and another from Shum. A critical block by Werbel and Carranza tied the score at 8-8, and another run extended the lead to 14-12. The team faced a brief challenge but regained control with a decisive service ace from Shum and a kill from Carranza, building a 21-17 lead.
Occidental closed the set with a strong finish. Curtis-Revelle added another kill, and after a brief response from Pomona-Pitzer, Shoop secured the final point with a kill set up by Taylor. The set concluded with Occidental securing a 25-21 victory.
Occidental began the fourth set with momentum, as Carranza quickly tied the score at 1-1 with a kill from Payne. A service ace by Taylor helped Occidental briefly regain the lead at 6-5. However, Pomona-Pitzer responded, leveraging a series of points including kills from Tene Ariyo and Paige Mountanos to move ahead.
Occidental maintained pressure, with Shoop delivering a kill to narrow the gap to 8-7. Curtis-Revelle contributed with a service ace, leveling the score at 9-9. Despite these efforts, Pomona-Pitzer pulled away with a string of successful plays, pushing their advantage to 19-11.
Occidental continued to fight back, with Curtis-Revelle and Shoop each adding kills to keep the score competitive. However, Pomona-Pitzer secured the final points needed, concluding the set at 25-15 in their favor.
