Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Men's water polo narrowly falls on senior night

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 7-5, in a conference matchup at De Mandel Aquatics Center. Despite a strong start with a 2-2 tie in the first quarter, Occidental was unable to keep pace in the final quarter.

It was senior night, so before the game, the Tigers honored the four seniors in the program; Jack Schroeder, Ocean Pogorel, Travis Hughes and Max Stone. All of which contributed on the evening.

Occidental and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps engaged in a tightly contested matchup, with Travis Hughes opening the scoring for the Tigers, assisted by Max Stone. The Stags quickly equalized as Nick Kennedy found the net. The teams continued to exchange leads, with Jake Eulenhoefer scoring for the Tigers, only for Weston Hartel to bring the Stags level just before the end of the first quarter. In the second half, the Stags pulled ahead with a crucial penalty goal by Kennedy. Despite a late push by the Tigers, including another goal from Hughes, the Stags sealed the victory with a final score of 7-5, with Ivey Gehring scoring. The Stags outshot the Tigers 27-23, capitalizing on two penalty goals to secure the win.

Hughes led the offensive charge for the Tigers, scoring two goals on three attempts while also winning a sprint. Eulenhoefer matched Hughes with two goals, converting on two of his seven shots and contributing with a block. Lars Schubert made a defensive impact by collecting four steals and recording one block. Stone facilitated the offense with two assists and added two blocks on the defensive end. In goal, Jack Schroeder provided stability, making 12 saves and adding an assist.
