LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's soccer readies for its first trip to the SCIAC tournament since 2021, with a first round game against Chapman tonight, November 3 at Patterson Field.
Â
The Tigers most recent victory in the SCIAC Tournament came in 2018, when they won the conference championship, beating Cal Lutheran in the semis and Pomona-Pitzer on penalties in the title game.
Â
SCIAC TOURNAMENT WHAT TO KNOW
Â
No. 1 (6) Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens – 13-0-3 (9-0-3)
No. 2 (17) Cal Lutheran Regals – 13-3-2 (9-2-1)
No. 3 (25) Claremont-M-S – 13-2-3 (8-2-2)
No. 4 Occidental Tigers – 7-6-2 (6-5-1)
No. 5 Chapman Panthers – 8-6-4 (5-4-3)
Â
The nation's premiere women's soccer conference features three teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25; all ranked first through third in the West Region.
Â
Pomona-Pitzer is one of five undefeated teams across all of Division III, while Cal Lutheran is just a season removed from a national title. Claremont-M-S handed the Tigers their worst loss in conference play, while Chapman bested Oxy twice in the regular season. A tough hill ahead for the Tigers, who have found their stride in the last two weeks.
Â
Going 2-1 over their last three games – scoring seven goals in that span, the Tigers needed a win over Whittier to nab the four seed on Wednesday, October 29. A pair of scores and a clean sheet from
Melanie Rodriguez in goal propelled Oxy to a 2-0 victory.
Â
THIRD TIMES THE CHARM
Â
Despite losing the Chapman twice in the regular season, 1-0 each time, the Tigers look to break through in the SCIAC Tournament.
Â
Chapman, just 45 minutes away from clinching the fourth seed on Saturday, allowed two second-half goals to La Verne at home, earning a draw and maintaining the fifth seed in the standings.
Â
Since beating the Tigers on October 18, Chapman has gone 1-1-1, losing the Cal Lutheran 2-0, beating Whittier 1-0 and tying La Verne.
Â
The Tigers are hoping to capitalize on an upward trend and home field advantage on Monday.
Â
STEADY, STEADY
Â
Mia Steadman, the cornerstone of the Tigers' offensive attack got back in the scoring column with the game-winning goal at Whittier. A free kick from well outside of the box squeaked in the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Â
Steadman's presence is heavily felt by the Tigers. When she scores, Oxy is 5-0-0 on the season.
Â
Like her teammates, Steadman is trending in the right direction with two goals in her last three contests.
Â
TOURNAMENT OUTLOOK
Â
With a victory tonight, the Tigers would face the No. 1 seed Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.
Â
Oxy has played the Sagehens well through two meetings in 2025. The first, Oxy held a 1-0 lead through most of the game, but a late goal helped Pomona-Pitzer to a draw. Their subsequent match ended in a 1-0 Sagehen victory, despite the Tigers putting up six more shots.
Â
That game would take place Wednesday, November 5 in Claremont.
