LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's water polo dropped all four of its contests at the Claremont Convergence from February 28-March 1.
Â
GAME 1 VS UC Merced – L, 9-4
Â
Despite never leading, Oxy kept the game close and even outscored the Bobcats in the second quarter. However, after closing the deficit to 5-4 to end the first half, UC Merced pulled away with a 4-0 run to end the game.
Â
Koko Butcher led the Tigers with two goals in the game.
Emma Wilderman and
Tori Carlson added one apiece.
Â
Alexandra Moye did all she could to keep the Tigers in the game, racking up 11 saves, but the Bobcats defense proved too much for Oxy.
Â
GAME 2 VS Cal St. Monterey Bay – L, 13-7
Â
A little more offense in this one, but a 3-0 run to open the game, followed by a 4-0 run to close it by the Otters was the difference.
Â
In the middle quarters, the Tigers outscored CSUMB 7-6 with five different Tigers scoring goals on the evening. Butcher and
Hannah Lee were the lone Tigers to tally two goals in the game – the first year Lee has four to open her young career, while Butcher has eight in their final campaign.
Â
Another first year,
Mia Colabianchi added a goal as did
Estella Gray and
Lucy Worden. Moye tacked on nine saves.
Â
GAME 3 VS McKendree – L, 14-6
Â
The Tigers played close with the Bearcats through the first half, playing to a tie midway through the second quarter, 3-3. However, as the offense went stagnant, the Bearcats set fire. A nine-goal outburst in the final two periods gave McKendree a big late lead.
Â
Moye had a great first half, notching five of her nine saves in the second quarter. Two came on five-meter penalty opportunities.
Â
Offensively, Carlson and
Cate Sloat tallied two goals. Lee and Wilderman each added one.
Â
GAME 4 VS Augustana – L, 9-7 OT
Â
A hard-fought defensive battle through the first two quarters, Oxy scored its first goal with two minutes to go in the half. Worden began a six-minute, four goal stretch for the Tigers.
Â
She converted on the power play, then just two minutes later in the waning seconds of the second quarter, Butcher notched their first goal of the game. After a Carlson goal to bring the score even at three, Butcher added another.
Â
Lee closed the third quarter with a floating shot, falling in the goal just over the outstretched arm of the Augustana keeper, closing the third at an even 5-5.
Â
Moye picked up a key save to open the fourth on a five-meter opportunity, but minutes later a Vikings power play gave them the lead until Gray, like Lee, lobbed a perfectly placed ball into the cage to tie the game at six.
Â
On the next possession a key miss from the Vikings on a five-meter penalty, gave Oxy a chance to take the lead, which Butcher did, scoring their third goal of the game and seventh of the weekend.
Â
Augustana tied it up towards the end of the fourth and carried that momentum into the overtime periods, scoring a goal in each, notching the victory. Â Â
Â
The Tigers are back in action at home on Wednesday, March 5, hosting Redlands at 7 p.m.
