LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Softball played the defending New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) champions Williams College Ephs in a doubleheader at Bell Field on Sunday afternoon.
GAME 1, L 10-1
Game 1 started with Sam Alfaro inducing a 1-2-3 top of the 1st inning that was highlighted by Anna Kim making a phenomenal diving catch just beyond the infield grass behind shortstop to end the frame.
Williams College was able to get ahead early with the long ball, hitting a solo home run and a 3-run home run in the 3rd inning.
After the Ephs added on in the 4th with two runs to lead 6-0, the Tigers rallied in the bottom half of the inning.
Evelyn Lorch got things started with a one-out walk before Bella Harding moved her over with a single to center field. Philycia Pedrosa would lay down a perfectly executed bunt to 3rd base for a single that loaded the bases.
With the bases loaded, Jordan Lebsock hit a ball hard down the first base line that the 1st basemen stopped with a nice play and was able to get a force out at 1st, but the run came in from 3rd base on the play and Oxy trailed 6-1.
The Ephs scored four runs in the 6th inning and would take the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 10-1.
Sam Alfaro pitched 5 innings in the game for a new season-high in innings on the mound after returning from injury on Saturday.
Bella Harding had two hits in the game, and Anna Kim and Philycia Pedrosa each had a hit as well.
GAME 2, L 8-1
In game 2 of the day, the Ephs' bats stayed hot, scoring a run in the first and two more on a home run in the 3rd.
Oxy capitalized on an error by Williams in the 3rd inning with Anna Kim bringing home Ava Quezada to score on a single.
In the top of the 5th inning, Alysha Wagner made a highlight reel play moving to her left before firing the ball over to first on a ball hit up the middle for the final out of the inning. Wagner also had two hits at the plate in the game.
Brooke Doebler was on the mound in this game for the Tigers and was making solid pitches throughout the game, allowing only four earned runs through the first 6 innings of the game.
The Ephs would take game 2 by a score of 8-1 after adding on three runs in the top of the 7th inning.
Oxy will be back in action on Thursday, March 27th in a doubleheader at Bell Field against Carleton College with games at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
