LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's water polo closed its home slate celebrating senior night against Whittier on Wednesday, April 16. A
Koko Butcher buzzer beater won it for the Tigers 10-9.
Â
The Tigers honored the six seniors in the program – Butcher,
Alexandra Moye,
Norah Ruvalcaba,
Cate Sloat,
Samantha Edgington and
Abigail Anderson. The bunch helped the Tigers to their winningest season since 2014. The Tigers won five SCIAC games, two more than every season in the past 11 years.
Â
Tonight's game saw the Tigers come from behind. After trailing 4-3 at half, the Tigers scored four goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 7-5 lead.
Â
Butcher and
Tori Carlson each scored two goals in that span and the Tigers created four steal opportunities.
Â
Lucy Worden converted on a key goal to open the fourth quarter, extending the Tiger lead to a game-high three. Whittier answered with a four-goal run, however, taking a 9-8 lead midway through the fourth, but Worden came through to score the equalizer with 2:55 left.
Â
After a solid defensive stand to close the quarter, with less than 10 seconds to go, Whittier slung a shot off the post to avoid a shot clock violation. An Oxy rebound and time out left the Tigers with six seconds in regulation to score a game winner. Butcher took it, let it rip and scored a goal as time expired.
Â
The Tigers close the 2025 season on the road at Claremont-M-S on Saturday, April 19.
