LOS ANGELES — Westcliff University defeated Occidental College 3-1 on Friday at W.C. Patterson Field at Jack Kemp Stadium. The Tigers took an early lead with a goal in the first half, but the Warriors responded with two goals before halftime and added a third in the second half. Westcliff's defense held strong, saving six shots and allowing only one goal in the match.
The first half began with the Tigers taking an early lead as
Alessia Sacchi found the back of the net in the 11th minute with a beautifully placed kick just outside the box. Despite multiple attempts on target, including shots by
Mia Merkelbach and
Allison Bello, Occidental couldn't extend their advantage. Westcliff's Amylette Lopez responded with a penalty kick in the 31st minute and added another goal shortly after, sending the Tigers into the break trailing 2-1.
The second half began with Occidental pressing for opportunities, but it was Westcliff who extended their lead with a goal by Jysabella Tolentino in the 64th minute, making it 3-1. The Tigers responded with a flurry of attempts, including shots from
Mia Steadman and
Caitlin Kailus; however, goalkeeper Kayli Cokley of the Warriors made multiple crucial saves. Despite Occidental's efforts and possession, they were unable to alter the scoreline, concluding the match with a final score of 3-1 in favor of Westcliff.

Occidental now holds a record of 1-1-1 overall. Westcliff improves to 5-0-1 overall following the win. The Tigers next matchup will be their SCIAC opener against the University of La Verne on September 17th at 7:00pm at Patterson Field.
