Shum, Shoop, Carranza shine in Foster's first SCIAC victory

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental (3-6, 1-0 SCIAC) edged out Chapman (6-5, 1-1 SCIAC) in a five-set thriller at Rush Gymnasium on Saturday, capturing the match 25-27, 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12. The Tigers secured the victory with a strong attacking performance in the third set, hitting .455, and outpaced the Panthers in total kills, 72-53.

Jasmine Shum's marquee performance with a big time block and a kill to seal the victory and put the Tigers on the map as a team to watch in the SCIAC.

The first set began with Occidental establishing an initial lead following a service error by Chapman's Kelsey Magley. Ariana Carranza was instrumental in early exchanges, contributing kills to keep the scores competitive. Despite some service errors from Occidental, Sloane Shoop and Shum kept the team in contention with timely kills, including a late surge that brought the score to a 24-24 tie.

As the set progressed, Chapman capitalized on some attack errors from Occidental, with Olivia Harrison and Ava Bradbury providing key kills for the visitors. The set remained tightly contested, but Chapman edged ahead in the final moments. The set closed with Chapman securing a narrow 27-25 win after a crucial attack error from Shum.

Occidental began the second set by quickly establishing momentum with a service ace from Lila Payne, followed by a kill from Shum. The team maintained pressure, taking advantage of attack errors by Chapman to widen the lead. Shoop and Eliana Channell contributed critical kills to keep Occidental ahead.

Midway through the set, Chapman responded to tighten the score, but Occidental's defensive efforts, including blocks by Anna Curtis-Revelle and Corinne Van Haeren, helped maintain the lead. Payne's consistent setting enabled key plays from Shoop and Shum, which were instrumental in pushing the score forward.

As the set concluded, Occidental capitalized on several attack errors from Chapman, while maintaining a strong offensive push with consecutive kills from Channell. The home team closed the set with a decisive 25-22 score, securing the set with a final kill from Channell, assisted by Kendall Taylor.

Occidental opened the third set with a quick response to Chapman's early 3-0 lead, as Shum and Van Haeren each recorded kills to pull the score to 3-2. The Tigers maintained their momentum, with Carranza and Channell contributing crucial points to level the score at 4-4.

Midway through the set, Occidental capitalized on Chapman's errors and built a 9-7 advantage after a string of successful plays including kills by Shoop and an attack error by Chapman. Despite occasional service errors, the Tigers extended their lead with key contributions from Carranza, who notched multiple kills to push the score to 14-17.

In the closing stages, Occidental continued their strong performance with service aces from Anna Schubert, increasing the lead to 21-16. Shum delivered decisive kills, and a service error by Chapman secured a 25-19 victory for Occidental in the third set.

Occidental began the fourth set looking to shift momentum, with Carranza and Channell contributing key kills to keep the score competitive. Chapman, however, capitalized on several Occidental errors, allowing them to inch ahead. Payne's distribution facilitated multiple Occidental points, but Chapman maintained pressure through consistent offensive plays.

Despite a service ace and notable blocks from Van Haeren and Curtis-Revelle, Chapman extended their lead midway through the set. As Chapman neared set point, Shum's kills and a final push from Occidental closed the gap to 24-21. However, Chapman secured the set with a late kill, finishing 25-21 and concluding the set in their favor.

Occidental began the fifth set with momentum, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit against Chapman. Shum contributed significantly with a kill and a service ace, helping Occidental take a 5-2 lead. Carranza and Channell's defensive plays further extended the home team's advantage to 8-6.

Chapman responded by leveling the score at 8-8, but Occidental quickly regained control. Shoop's consecutive kills put Occidental ahead again at 10-9. Despite Chapman's attempts to catch up, Payne's service ace and Shum's offensive efforts pushed Occidental to a decisive 15-12 victory, closing the match on a high note.
