LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental (8-14, 3-8 SCIAC) defeated Caltech (6-15, 2-10 SCIAC) 3-2 on Tuesday at Rush Gymnasium. Occidental won the deciding fifth set 15-13 after turning a 10-9 deficit into a 14-11 lead.
Occidental overcame a 19-17 deficit in the opening set, taking four straight service points on
Anna Curtis-Revelle's serve for a 21-19 lead. After Caltech tied the set at 22-22,
Jasmine Shum and
Sloane Shoop added late kills before
Elizabeth Hermosillo finished the 25-23 set with a kill.
Occidental pulled even late in the second set, getting kills from
Corinne Van Haeren and
Sloane Shoop on back-to-back points to tie Caltech at 23-23. Earlier, Occidental responded to a 5-0 start by Caltech with kills from
Abby Werbel and
Anna Curtis-Revelle during a push to 5-3. Caltech answered the 23-23 tie with the final two points to take the set, 25-23.
Occidental flipped the third set after falling behind 7-6, with
Jasmine Shum tying it on a kill and adding a service ace as Occidental moved in front. Van Haeren followed with a kill and
Eyleen Sanchez served an ace during the push to 11-8, and Occidental later closed the set on
Sloane Shoop's kill for a 25-19 finish.
Occidental cut Caltech's lead from 11-5 to 11-9 in the fourth set, with
Jasmine Shum and Van Haeren recording kills before
Abby Werbel and Van Haeren combined on a block. Caltech answered with the next three points and later kept Occidental from closing the gap further. The set finished with Caltech taking it 25-20.
Occidental erased a 10-8 deficit in the fifth set with five straight points, including a four-point service stretch by
Eyleen Sanchez that featured kills from
Sloane Shoop and a Sanchez ace. Caltech closed back within one at 14-13, but Shoop finished the set with a kill from Sanchez for a 15-13 Occidental win.
