LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental defeated Cuesta 16-11 on Saturday. Occidental outscored Cuesta 7-2 in the first quarter and held Cuesta to one goal in the fourth quarter, finishing with 32 shots to Cuesta's 31.
Occidental opened with five consecutive goals, starting with
Atticus Wahab-Holles at 7:46 and continuing through
Nicholas Karamian's power-play finish at 2:13. Cuesta got on the board at 1:44, but Occidental answered at 1:27 through
Jack Davis and again at :06 through
Joey Gutierrez after another Cuesta goal.Â
The teams continued to trade scoring in the second quarter, with Gutierrez converting a penalty shot at 5:42,
Miles McDaniel scoring at 4:04 and Karamian adding another penalty-shot goal at :08. Cuesta scored four times in the third quarter, but Occidental countered with goals from
Lucas Washburn at 6:22, Wahab-Holles at 2:55 and
Noah Emmitt at :01.Â
After Cuesta opened the fourth quarter at 7:04, Occidental closed with three straight goals from Gutierrez at 4:56, Wahab-Holles at 2:55 and Davis at 1:51 to finish a 16-11 result while holding a 32-31 edge in shots.
Wahab-Holles scored three goals on five shots and added three field blocks and a steal. Gutierrez also finished with three goals, adding one assist and one steal.
Zane Derrod recorded three assists, one steal and one exclusion drawn.
Lars Schubert tallied four steals and added an assist.
