LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental lost its match to Cal Lutheran 3-1 on Tuesday at Rush Gymnasium. Occidental took the second set 26-24 after moving from a 17-15 deficit to a 20-18 lead, but dropped the other three sets 10-25, 16-25 and 17-25.
The Tigers were the second SCIAC team to earn at least one set off of Cal Lutheran in conference play this season. The 9-5 (5-0) Regals posted three-straight sweeps after opening up conference play with a 3-2 win over Claremont-M-S.
Occidental stayed within 5-4 in the first set behind kills from
Jasmine Shum,
Sloane Shoop and
Anna Curtis-Revelle, but Cal Lutheran created separation from there. Shum, Shoop and
Lauren Neely added kills as Occidental tried to answer, but Cal Lutheran closed the set 25-10.
Occidental turned the second set after falling behind 17-14, moving ahead 20-18 behind a stretch that included
Anna Curtis-Revelle's kill and service ace,
Katelyn Cajigas' kill, and a block by
Abby Werbel and
Sloane Shoop. After Cal Lutheran tied it at 24-24, Occidental took the final two points on a Cal Lutheran attack error and
Corinne Van Haeren's kill from
Chloe Jeong to win the set 26-24.
Occidental's primary push in the third set came with
Eyleen Sanchez serving, when it scored four straight points to move from 18-7 to 18-11. Curtis-Revelle and
Sloane Shoop had kills during that stretch, and Sanchez added a service ace. Cal Lutheran later closed out the set 25-16.
Occidental erased an early 4-0 deficit and drew even at 11-11, with kills from
Abby Werbel,
Sloane Shoop, Curtis-Revelle and
Corinne Van Haeren contributing to the response. Cal Lutheran then scored seven straight points to move ahead 18-11, a stretch Occidental could not overcome despite a later Shoop kill,
Elizabeth Hermosillo ace and
Jasmine Shum kill. Cal Lutheran took the set 25-17.
