LOS ANGELES — Occidental College fell to Suffolk University 8-7 in an extra-inning contest on Friday, despite recording 15 hits over the course of the game.
Occidental took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning, but Suffolk rallied with four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to secure the win.
Suffolk took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, capitalizing on a double by Jolie Quintana and an error, putting them ahead 2-0. The Tigers responded in the second inning with
Kadence Bernard scoring an unearned run, making it 2-1 after the second inning.
In the third, Occidental tied the game 2-2 when
Anna Kim doubled and later scored on a single by Bernard. The fourth inning saw the Tigers take control with a three-run burst. Kim,
Alysha Wagner, and
Molly Houtkooper all contributed to the scoring, pushing the lead to 5-2 after the fourth.
The Tigers added another run in the fifth inning when Wagner scored on an error, increasing their lead to 6-2. Suffolk remained scoreless through the sixth inning, while Occidental's offense was held at bay as well.
The seventh inning brought a significant shift as Suffolk rallied with four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Lily Newhall, tying the game at 6-6. In the eighth inning, Suffolk scored two more runs, taking an 8-6 lead, but the Tigers pushed back with a run of their own when
Jordan Lebsock scored on a single by
Rachel Rotunno.
Despite Occidental's efforts, the game concluded with Suffolk edging out a narrow victory. The final score was Suffolk 8, Occidental 7.
Kim showcased an impressive performance, recording four hits, including a double, and scoring two runs. Bernard contributed with three hits and two RBIs, demonstrating effectiveness at the plate. Lebsock added to the scoreboard with two RBIs, capitalizing on opportunities with runners in scoring position. Houtkooper tallied three hits and drove in a run, supporting the team's offensive effort.
Jacynda Lindsay had a strong outing on the mound, pitching 5 innings while only allowing one earned run and striking out five.
The Tigers will be back in action on Sunday, February 15th with a doubleheader against Stevens. Game times are set for 12:00PM and 2:00PM.
