CLAREMONT, Calif. — Occidental (0-2, 0-2) fell to No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer (1-0, 1-0) with a final score of 17-7 on Wednesday evening at Merritt Field. Occidental's offensive efforts included two power-play goals, but Pomona-Pitzer's defense limited scoring opportunities throughout the match.
The Sagehens margin of victory was the smallest its been since 2020, when the Tigers played Pomona-Pitzer to a seven-point loss.Â
Despite trailing 11-0 at half, the Tigers won the second 7-6 with help from eight saves by
Charlotte Dreyfus and a pair of goals from first-year
Aubrey Chang and senior
Olivia Okamoto. Okamoto now has 142 career goals, just four away from surpassing fifth all-time in program history.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead in the third quarter with a strong offensive showing, but Occidental responded with a man-up goal by Okamoto, assisted by
Khamille Hart-Smith towards the end of the frame. In the closing minutes,
Ava Whelan scored for Occidental, but Pomona-Pitzer maintained control and ended the quarter ahead.
Occidental made a strong push in the final quarter with five goals. Chang scored twice for Occidental, including a free position goal at 13:12.
Tirzah Rivera contributed with a man-up goal and two assists, setting up
Ellie Mahoney at 3:51. Okamoto added a late goal before time expired off of a free position shot.Â
