Women's water polo splits day with win over Wash & Jeff

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Occidental College faced two contrasting outcomes this week at De Mandel Aquatics Center. In their first game, Occidental (3-14) was defeated decisively by Bucknell (10-6) with a score of 16-1. The Tigers managed only a single goal from a power play, while Bucknell capitalized on three power play opportunities.

Bucknell took control early, with Aliyah Cohen scoring and Gwen Kallmeyer adding another in the first quarter, making it 2-0. Their momentum continued into the second quarter as Caitlin Stott and Bella Schraa found the back of the net, extending the lead to 5-0. The third quarter showcased a dominant performance from Bucknell, with six consecutive goals, including one by Olivia Garcia, pushing the score to 11-0. Occidental managed to break through with Rachel Khavinson scoring, but Bucknell responded with two late goals to lead 13-1. Bucknell closed out the game strong, with goals from Lin Naroaka and Cohen in the fourth quarter, securing a decisive 16-1 victory.

Khavinson was the sole goal scorer for Occidental, converting on her only shot attempt of the game. Charlee Spence made a notable contribution in goal, recording four saves. Mia Bananis added defensive efforts with two steals and two saves, while Ruby Vogel also contributed defensively with two steals.

In their second game, Occidental (4-14) secured a thrilling 13-11 victory over Washington & Jefferson (6-4). The Tigers capitalized on a strong third quarter, outscoring their opponent 5-2 to gain a decisive lead.

Occidental started strong, with Estella Gray scoring, followed by Victoria Duncan's goal in the first quarter. The Presidents responded with a penalty goal by Emmie Ratcliff and took the lead with Mackenzie Caron's two consecutive goals, making it 3-2. The teams traded goals throughout the second quarter, with Duncan's score keeping the Tigers in contention, but Caron quickly answered to maintain the lead for Washington & Jefferson. In the third quarter, Occidental took control, scoring five goals, including Duncan's to close the period leading 12-8. Despite the Presidents' late efforts in the fourth quarter, Occidental held on for a 13-11 victory, outshooting their opponent 36-33.

Victoria Duncan led the Tigers with four goals and added two assists, demonstrating her offensive impact. Jillian Carlson contributed significantly by scoring twice on three attempts, while also managing to block a shot and win a sprint. Lucy Worden was effective with two goals on seven shots, complemented by a block and a drawn exclusion. In goal, Mia Bananis made nine saves and excelled defensively with five steals.43
