ORANGE, Calif. — Occidental College (1-4, 1-4) fell to Chapman University (2-2, 2-2) with a final score of 15-7 on Saturday at Wilson Field. Despite the loss, the Tigers scored three power-play goals during the match.
The first quarter began with Occidental's
Ellie Mahoney securing the initial draw control. Chapman opened the scoring with a free position goal by Zoey Stephens at 10:04, followed by a goal from Madi Escobar, assisted by Ava Regan, at 9:22. The Tigers responded with a goal by
Kelly Peir at 8:50, and shortly after,
Ava Whelan netted another goal, assisted by
Tirzah Rivera, at 8:05 to tie the score. Both teams exchanged turnovers and defensive stops throughout the remainder of the quarter, ending with a 2-2 tie.
Chapman extended its lead early in the second quarter with Ada Carr scoring at 14:27, assisted by Tade Scheid. Scheid added another goal at 9:21, this time with an assist from Carr. The Tigers responded with a man-up goal by Whelan at 4:30, assisted by Peir, narrowing the deficit. However, Carr capitalized on a free position opportunity at 2:25, pushing Chapman ahead. The quarter concluded with Chapman leading 5-3 after a late save by Occidental's
Charlotte Dreyfus on a shot by Scheid.
Occidental and Chapman battled through a tense third quarter, each netting three goals. Mahoney opened the scoring for the Tigers with a goal at 11:53, assisted by
Olivia Okamoto. Chapman responded at 9:42 when Brooke Bernstein scored with help from Stephens. Okamoto then converted a free position shot at 8:10, putting the Tigers level again. Shortly after, Peir gave the Tigers a brief lead with a man-up goal at 6:00. Chapman regained momentum, scoring two consecutive goals, including a free position shot by Stephens at 2:15, ending the quarter with a narrow 8-6 lead.
Chapman took control in the final quarter, starting with Scheid's goal at 13:42, assisted by Escobar. Escobar then added two more goals, including a free position shot at 10:22, prompting Occidental to call a timeout. Despite the strategic pause, Chapman's Hailey Buck scored another free position goal at 7:00. The Tigers managed a response with a man-up goal by Rivera, assisted by Okamoto at 3:48. However, Carr sealed their commanding lead with a goal at 0:47, concluding a dominant 7-1 quarter for Chapman.
