LOS ANGELES — Occidental defeated La Sierra 3-0 on Tuesday at Rush Gymnasium. Occidental took each set 25-19 and hit .303, finishing with 35 kills and eight attack errors.
Occidental erased a 15-10 deficit with six straight points, tying the set on
Eyleen Sanchez's service ace and going ahead 16-15 on
Anna Curtis-Revelle's kill from
Kendall Taylor before winning the set 25-19. Earlier in the 1st set, Occidental scored the first point on a
Sloane Shoop kill from Taylor and moved ahead 3-1 behind kills from Curtis-Revelle and
Lauren Neely, but La Sierra answered to tie the set at 4-4 and later led 13-7 after consecutive Aleksandra Augustyniak aces and a Maylynn Mitchell kill. After La Sierra evened the set at 16-16, Occidental immediately scored four straight on two La Sierra attack errors, a
Jasmine Shum kill and a
Chloe Jeong service ace to move in front 20-16. Curtis-Revelle,
Corinne Van Haeren and Shoop added kills down the stretch, with Shoop's final kill from Taylor closing the first set.
In the second set, Occidental opened with early separation and later held off La Sierra's mid-set push to win the set 25-19. After a 1-1 tie,
Jasmine Shum was part of a block and had a kill, and
Eyleen Sanchez added a service ace during a five-point Occidental stretch that made it 6-1. La Sierra worked back with a run of their own to get the set score to 15-13, but Shum answered with a kill from Taylor, and Occidental kept finding sideouts through Van Haeren and
Katelyn Cajigas. Van Haeren added two late kills,
Sloane Shoop and
Audrey Makler combined on a block for a 23-18 lead, and Shum's kill set up Sanchez's set-ending ace.

Jasmine Shum before
Eyleen Sanchez served out four La Sierra errors for a 25-19 finish. Earlier, Occidental built a 5-2 edge behind a block from Curtis-Revelle and Cajigas and consecutive
