Hall of Fame Bylaws

INTRODUCTION

The Occidental College Athletics Hall of Fame honors members of the Occidental community for outstanding achievement in competition and/or service, dedication, and commitment to Occidental athletics. Operating under the authority of Occidental College, the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee selects and inducts individuals and teams worthy of recognition while upholding the integrity of the institution and its athletics program.

The essential factor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is demonstrated exceptional contributions to the Athletics Department.

HALL OF FAME CATEGORIES, CRITERIA, AND CANDIDACY

ATHLETE

Candidates nominated in this category must:

  • Have displayed extraordinary performance while participating in athletics (e.g., All-American, All-SCIAC, All-Region (or era-appropriate recognition))
  • be 10 years post-competition.

TEAM

Candidates nominated in this category must:

  • have displayed extraordinary performance while participating in athletics (e.g., exceptional win/loss record, NCAA appearance, national ranking)
  • be 10 years post-competition.

The "team," not its individual members, are considered Hall of Fame honorees. 

COACH

Candidates nominated in this category must have:

  • made outstanding contributions through coaching, teaching, and mentoring
  • superior coaching win/loss record.

EXTRAORDINARY SERVICE

Candidates nominated in this category must be:

  • an outstanding contributor through professional service, support, and/or volunteer work.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominees will be solicited from:

  • Current Athletics Staff
  • Occidental Faculty, Staff, and Administrators
  • Alumni

The nomination process will include the name of the nominee, a description of their achievements, and a justification for the category for which they are being recommended.

Once nominated, a candidate remains in the pool of potential honorees.

SELECTION COMMITTEE COMPOSITION

The committee will have seven total members:

  • Athletic Director (Co-Chair of Committee) 
  • Director of Athletics Communications (Co-Chair of Committee) 
  • Athletics Leadership Team Member
  • Senior Woman Administrator 
  • Faculty Member At-Large
  • Alumni Member At-Large
  • Specialty Advisor 

The faculty and alumni at-large members are appointed for a 3-year renewable term.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

After review of nominations, the committee will determine inductees by a majority vote.

There should be no more than six entities inducted in a year except under exceptional circumstances.

AMENDMENTS 

These bylaws may be amended at any regularly scheduled meeting of the Selection Committee by a vote of two-thirds of the members in attendance.
