LOS ANGELES, Calif. (January 9, 2007) - Cold shooting (and a
couple of untimely turnovers) led to a 57-52 setback in Tuesday
night's rematch with the Chapman Panthers at
Rush Gym. The Tigers close the
non-conference portion of their schedule with a 7-4 overall
record. Chapman, which defeated Occidental for the second
time in ten days, improved to 12-5.
Linda Ly's steal and fastbreak layup gave Chapman a 52-50 lead
with just over a minute remaining and
the Panthers hit five of their next six free throw
attempts to seal the win. Conversely, Occidental
missed a pair of free throws, committed a costly turnover, and
clanked a late three-point attempt that would have cut the
deficit to three. Laura Mohler '10 converted a
lay-up as time expired to provide the final margin.
The Tigers had clawed back from an early 15-point deficit
with a 16-4 run midway through the second half.
Gillian Nugent '10 cut the Panthers' lead to 40-33 with a
three-pointer at the 13-minute mark, setting the table for
All-SCIAC selections Stacie Roshon '08 and Amelia Abernathy '07,
who combined for the Tigers' next ten points.
Abernathy capped the rally on a put back that tied the
score at 44 with 7:23 remaining. Chapman's Nicole
Hayman, who scored a game-high 27 points, answered with a
three-pointer seconds later and Jessica Kunisaki hit the first of
two free throw attempts to build the Panthers' lead back to
four.
Occidental took a brief lead, 49-48, after a Jessica Cross '10
free throw with 4:46 remaining but neither team scored over the
next two minutes. Roshon finished with 16 points and 12
rebounds while Abernathy added 13 points and 12 boards.
Occidental held a 52-27 advantage on the boards - an
incredible 19-2 advantage on the offensive glass - but missed
most of its second-chance opportunities.
The Tigers begin SCIAC play with a pair of home contests,
Thursday, Jan. 11 vs. Caltech and Saturday, Jan. 13 against
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Thursday's game is scheduled for a
7:30 tip-off; Saturday's contest starts at 5:00pm.
