LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 3, 2007) –
Using his head and his foot junior midfielder Ben
Waters scored three times against Whittier College en
route to a 4-1 victory on the Lower Soccer Field at Occidental
College today.
Waters put the Tigers on the board in the
18th minute. The Poets offense knotted the game at 1-1
with a score by DJ Covarrubias five minutes later.
Just before the half Oxy senior John
Minger found the back of the net with the second and ultimate
winning goal with 12 seconds to go in the first half.
Occidental controlled the ball for the
majority of the game taking 24 total shots to the five Whittier
attempts. Oxy had four corner kicks. The final one flew off the
foot of David Rosenberg and found the head of
Waters who sent the ball into the net for the fourth goal of the
contest in the 87th minute. Waters had scored nine
minutes earlier on another Rosenberg shot that hit the post and
ricocheted back into the field of play. Waters softly kicked the
ball past the Poets goalie.
Tigers goalie Alex Combs
recorded four saves while Poets keeper Paul Stepler-Camp tallied
five.
With the win the Tigers improve to 4-6
overall, 3-4 in SCIAC play. The loss drops the Poets to 1-8-1,
1-5-1.
Oxy will host the University of La Verne
Leopards at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 on the Lower Soccer
Field.
