LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 26, 2007) –
Both teams were undefeated entering the day and one would walk away
with the top spot among the seven Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams. Today, the victory went
to the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who outscored the Tigers
3-2 at the Lower Soccer Field on the campus of Occidental College.
In just the sixth minute of action CMS senior
forward Megan Kum scored giving the Athenas an early advantage.
Twenty minutes into the first half freshman Laura Hagen added to
that lead with the second CMS goal of the contest.
Oxy freshman Jesi Sasaki cut
the deficit to one after scoring eight minutes later.
Going into the half way point the Tigers
trailed by one. The Athenas added their third and ultimate winning
goal in the 47th minute as Rebecca Pedroza found the
back of the net. Senior Adrienne Spivak added the
second Tigers' score of the game in the 50th
minute, but both teams remained scoreless for the final 40 minutes
of play.
Guarding the cages for their respective teams
Camila Friedman-Gerlicz (CMS) and Melissa Wagner
(OXY) each recorded eight saves.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took 16 shots, one more
than the Tigers, but Oxy finished with six corner kicks to the
Athenas' five.
Occidental's four game win-streak was
snapped with the loss and puts them at 4-2 overall, 3-1 in SCIAC
play while CMS improves to 7-3, 5-0 SCIAC.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday
when they travel to Cal Lutheran to take on the Regals who are
2-5-1, 1-1-1 SCIAC entering a Wednesday evening match-up with
Redlands.
