LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2007) –
For the second time this season the Tigers scored more than 100
points in a game. Occidental College defeated Caltech 101-49 in
their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home
opener tonight at Rush Gymnasium.
Thirteen different Tigers scored, with four
reaching double figures on the night. Brianne
Brown led all players with 17 points, while
Stephanie Babij (14), Gillian
Nugent (13) and Stacie Roshon (11)
followed in line. Nugent and Roshon each hit three from behind the
arc.
Brown added a game high eight assists and
Babij led all players with eight rebounds. Brown, Babij and
Britinee Yasukochi each stole the ball four times
in the game as well.
The bench supplied 46 points in the contest.
In just seven minutes of action Natalie Kolodinski
and Zoe Walsh combined for 14
points and nine rebounds. Jennifer Wilhelm added
five points while Caitlin Morgan and
Madeline Rose each scored a pair. Before she
fouled out, Asha Jordan tallied seven points with
a 5-for-5 performance from the line. Brittany
Mally hit a long shot and added a rebound and a steal in
limited action. Kassy Griswold added a rebound and
an assist in the game for Oxy.
Occidental took advantage of 33 Beavers'
turnovers, scoring 40 points off turnovers. They also used a 43-28
rebounding edge to their advantage as they turned 20 offensive
rebounds into 26 points. Occidental committed just seven turnovers
in the game.
The Tigers got out to a 15-0 lead before the
Beavers got on the board with 12:53 to play in the first
half.
Overall Oxy shot 48.2 percent from the field
and used a 10-for-11 performance from the line in the second half
to improve their free-throw percentage on the night to 70.6%.
Lindsay King played all 40 minutes for the
Beavers, leading the team with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Oxy improves to 10-4 overall, with a 2-1 SCIAC
mark. Caltech falls to 2-12, 0-3. .
Occidental will be back in action on Saturday,
Jan. 19 when they host the University of Redlands in Rush Gymnasium
at 5:00 p.m. preceding a men's basketball game against UR at
7:30 p.m.
