CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2007) – The
Tigers never trailed as they posted a 73-61 victory over the
Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at Voelkel Gymnasium on Thursday evening in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
Occidental jumped out to an early lead and
never trailed in the game. At the half way mark the Tigers led
37-28. With 12:48 left in regulation Britinee
Yasukochi sank a pair of free-throws, giving Occidental a
double figure lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of
the game.
The Tigers used that to go on a dominating
17-6 lead. The buckets kept coming as Oxy pulled ahead by 22 points
with five minutes remaining.
In a team high 33 minutes on the court
Stacie Roshon scored 18 points, thanks to a
7-for-7 performance from the free-throw line. Stephanie
Babij added 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field
and a 5-for-6 night at the line. Rounding out the double-figure
scoring tonight was Laura Mohler who chipped in
with 12 while adding a game high five assists.
Babij and Yasukochi were each credited with
three assists and Samantha Rossi added two. The
Tigers stole the ball 11 times, twice apiece by Babij and
Zoe Walsh.
Defensively Gillian Nugent
contributed with two blocks in just 10 minutes of action.
Brianne Brown and Babij added a block apiece as
well. Oxy forced 22 turnovers that led to 24 Tiger points.
Brown played just 20 minutes, finishing with
eight points and six rebounds.
Oxy had the rebounding edge tonight with 44
(20 offensive) as PP tallied 35. Yasukochi grabbed seven, with four
on the offensive end of the court, to lead the Tigers. Mohler added
five and Jennifer Wilhelm and Babij each grabbed
four. Occidental scored 14 points on second chances in the game.
Tigers combined to shoot 81.5% from the line
and 38.1 % from the field.
Mary Padden led all players with 22 points and
Deirdre Chew added 18 to the Sagehens' total. Kiki Broe
recorded a game-high nine rebounds.
Oxy improves to 11-5 overall, with a 3-2 SCIAC
mark while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 2-13, 1-4.
Occidental will be back in action on Saturday
when they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to face off against the
California Lutheran University Regals who currently hold an 8-7,
3-2 record.
