REDLANDS, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2008) – On a
hot Southern California Wednesday afternoon the Occidental College
Tigers fell to the University of Redlands 5-2 on the road in a
SCIAC conference match up. The Bulldogs held
off a late comeback by the Tigers, before securing the 5-2
victory.
Redlandsopened the scoring with a goal by Bryan
Fakkema in 20th minute, off an assist by Nick
Gunderson. Fakkema added an unassisted goal
nine minutes later to push the Bulldogs to a 2-0 advantage that
they held throughout the first period.
During the opening stanza Redlands was in
command statistically, holding an 18-0 lead in shots taken and 4-1
edge in corner kicks.
The
second period brought a different Oxy team to the field,
as Fran
Taylorquickly cut the lead in half by punching one
in there with less then two minutes gone in the final
period.
Redlandsresponded in the 56th minute with
a goal by Ross Schunk, the assist to Cale Rodriguez, but the Tigers
would not go away. Ten minutes later
Deryck Limagain cut the deficit to one with a shot
from the top of the box, off an assist from
sophomore Kris
Suzuki,
to leave the score 3-2 in favor of Redlands.
The
Tigers would get no closer, as Redlands knocked in two additional
goals, one by Cale Rodriguez in the 78th minute and the
other, off an assist from Rodriguez, came in the 79th
minute by Steve Chenes.
Occidental fought hard but a look inside the
numbers pointed to an uphill battle, as Redlands dominated with a
32-3 shots taken advantage and an 11-1 lead in corner
kicks.
Oxy
goalie Andrew
Larkindid come up with seven saves in the losing
effort to just one for Redlands goalie Evan Hobson.
Occidental falls to 3-4 overall, 3-2 in
SCIAC play while Redlands improves to 5-4-1, 4-0-1.
The
Tigers will be back on the field Saturday, Oct. 4 when they travel
to Claremont to face off with the Stags at 11:00
