LOS
ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 11, 2008) – For the first time this
season the Tigers played soccer on Patterson Field and walked away
victorious with a 3-1 win over visiting Whittier College, who they
defeated earlier this season on the road, in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
A pair of first half goals from Fran
Taylor was all the Tigers would need to claim their fourth
win of the season. In just the sixth minute of action Taylor scored
on a pass from Rob Riccardi. He followed up with
his seventh goal of the season when he found the back of the net on
an assist from Termaine Tucker who was back on the
field after missing a couple games with an injury.
The Poets continued to battle, cutting the
deficit to 2-1 when Joseph Gelaro scored an unassisted goal in the
40th minute.
Freshman James Kornfield
added to the offense in the 61st minute when he scored
on an assist from Griffin Harding.
Occidental controlled the pace of the game
from the beginning, taking 13 first half shots while allowing WC to
take just three. Overall the Tigers fired off 32 shots with the
Poets managing just nine.
With four corner kick chances in the second
half alone, Oxy took a 5-4 corner kick advantage in the game.
Andrew Larkin and
Alex Comb shared time in front of the goal with
Comb recording the only two Tiger saves in the game. Poet goalies
Mike Read and Paul Stepler-Camp combined for 12 saves.
Eleven different Tigers took shots in the game
with Kornfield leading the pack with seven while Taylor and
Aaron Mun finished with six shots apiece.
Occidental improves to 4-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 in
SCIAC play while Whittier falls to 2-10, 1-7.
Tomorrow evening the Tigers will host the
Haverford College Fords at 5:00 p.m. on Patterson Field in
non-conference action.
