LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2008) – An 82 minute battle
turned ugly when Occidental College and the University of Redlands
combined to score five goals in the final eight minutes of action
as the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 5-1 on Patterson Field in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic conference action this
morning.
After a scoreless first half the Bulldogs got on the board when
Bryan Fakkema scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute of
play.
The Bulldogs added a trio of scores in the 83rd and 84th minutes
from Steve Chenes, Ross Schunk(on an assist from Gilbert Flores)
and Alex Parker to give UR a 4-0 advantage.
Occidental quickly cut the deficit to 4-1 when Gilbert
Ortega found the back of the net on a pass from
Skylar Roush at the 89 minute mark.
UR struck again just 40 seconds before the end of regulation when
Jamie Griffin rounded out the offense for the Bulldogs.
Evan Hobson and Alex Combs recorded three and
seven saves, respectively, for the Bulldogs and Tigers.
Redlands outshot Oxy 16-10 and earned 10 corner kicks to the
Tigers' one.
Occidental drops to 6-7-2, 6-5-1 SCIAC while Redlands improves to
13-4-1 with a SCIAC leading 11-0-1 record.
The Tigers will resume play on Wednesday when they host
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-6-4, 6-3-3 SCIAC) at 4:00 p.m. on the
Lower Soccer Field.
