LOS
ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2008) – The day was gloomy, but the
outcome for the women's soccer team was bright today as
Occidental freshman Alex
McHenrycould not have timed her first collegiate
goal any better than she did in a 1-0 upset of
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who was previously unbeaten in SCIAC
play.
After a back and forth, scoreless battle on
Patterson Field the Tigers' McHenry found the back of the net
from 30 yards out after a breakaway to put Oxy on the board in the
78th minute of action.
The
defense took over from there, holding off the aggressive and
physical Athenas to clinch their third victory of the season.
Sophomore goalie Robin Feldman saved all six shots on goal for
Oxy.
Occidental had the upper hand despite these
two teams being incredibly well-matched. CMS outshot Oxy 10-9 and
earned five corner kicks to the Tigers' four. McHenry
and Corinne Winkler each took two shots as did the
Athenas' Giselle Galanto and Brittney Watson.
CMS
goalie Camila Friedman-Gerlicz recorded a pair of saves in the
loss.
Oxy
improves to 3-4 overall, 3-2 in SCIAC play while
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps falls to 4-4, 4-1.
The
Tigers will be back on the field Wednesday, Oct. 8 when they travel
to Thousand Oaks to play the 2007 SCIAC Post Season Tournament
Champion Regals from Cal Lutheran University at 4:00
