LOS
ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2008) – Today on the Lower Soccer
Field the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen dominated the Occidental College
Tigers, defeating the host 6-1 in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, completing the first
round of conference play.
Cal
Lutheran jumped out to an early advantage, taking 12 first half
shots to the Tigers' five. In the second half, CLU managed to
fire off 18 shots while the Oxy managed just eight. The Tigers took
the advantage in corner kicks with nine to CLU's five, but
were unable to capitalize on those opportunities.
Scoring started 13 minutes into the contest
when CLU senior Josh Moskowitz gave the visitors an instant lead to
work with. Ryan McDermott then netted the ultimate winning goal in
the 29th minute of action on an assist from freshman
Robert Spangler.
The
Tigers cut the deficit in half a minute later when
Gilberto Ortega scored his second goal of the season to
leave the score at 2-1 more than half way through the opening
period.
Things turned sour for the Tigers after that
goal. The Kingsmen added a third goal (Luke Slater) before the
break before tacking on three additional scores by Braden Hoyt,
McDermott (assist Hoyt) and Brad Hendrickson in the
57th, 74th and 88th minutes,
respectively to round out the CLU attack.
Andrew Larkin
and
Alex Comb split time in front of the cage for Oxy,
each allowing three goals, making 11 combined saves (Larkin –
six, Comb – five).
For
the Kingsmen, Michael Zubach made eight saves, allowing the only
Tigers goal of the game before Matt Railla took over in the final
8:55 to record two more saves for CLU.
Sophomore
Deryck Limled the pack with three shots, all on goal,
while the freshman-senior tandem of
James Kornfield and Griffin
Harding each took two shots on goal.
The
loss stretches the Occidental men's soccer is winless streak
to three, as they fall to 3-5-1 overall, 3-3-1 in SCIAC. Cal
Lutheran improves to 6-6, 4-3 on the season.
Occidental will play a pair of home games
this weekend on Patterson Field with the first a match-up between
the Tigers and Whittier College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and the
second, a non-conference game against Haverford College (PA) on
Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
