LOS
ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2008) – In
their second to last home match of the 2008 season the Occidental
College Tigers put up a fight against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Athenas in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
action but fell short in the end.
CMS
quickly took care of the Tigers in the first game of the match,
winning with a dominating 25-12 effort, but Oxy battled back in the
second game, falling late, 25-23, before the Athenas put the Tigers
away for good with a 25-x victory in game three to take the match
in straight sets.
Oxy
and CMS battled in the second game with the lead changing eight
times. Occidental opened with a 6-1 run and led 13-8 before the
Athenas tied the game at 13-13 and 23-23 with the teams producing a
number of long rallies. CMS took a 22-20 lead before head coach
Mike Talamantes took a time out to discuss a game-plan with his
team. Oxy was just not able to come up with enough points in the
end, dropping a close game.
Again the third game was tight
throughout.
Oxy
took an 18-14 lead before the Athenas chipped away, pulling the
game to 18 all. After Talamantes again used a timeout, CMS added
three more consecutive points before the Tigers got back the serve,
momentarily. With the score at 24-20 the Tigers would have a chance
but a serve out of bounds ended the game and match with the third
set going in favor of the Athenas 25-22.
Oxy
freshman Gwynne Davis led all players with 10 kills while CMS
spread out the scoring as 10 different players recorded a
kill. Ginger Grimes and Alex Harrison had 23 assists for the
Tigers and Athenas, respectively. Each team tallied six aces in the
contest.
Defensively CMS's Greer Donley
recorded a match-high 13 digs with Harrison (11) and Jessica
Waggoner (10) also reaching double figures. For the Tigers
freshman Kaitlin McAndrews led the pack with 11 digs. Right behind her
were Davis and Kathryn Bockmon who each had
nine.
The
Tigers drop to 8-10 overall, 4-9 in SCIAC while CMS
improves to 19-11, 9-4.
