ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2008) – The Occidental College
women's swimming and diving teams opened up the season with a
133-110 victory over Cal Lutheran University in the first dual meet
of the season.
Sophomore Karie Nickle, led
the pack with first place finishes in each of her individual events
and helped the Tigers earn a second place finish in the 400 yard
Free Relay. Nickle opened her SCIAC season with a three second
victory in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.55, which was a five
second improvement from the first time she swam that race this
year. In her second event of the day she hit the wall in 56.88 to
out touch her closest competitor en route to claiming a victory in
the 100 free. Finally she swam the third leg of the 400 free relay
in a time of 57.81.
Senior captain Erin Brinton
was the top finisher in the 1000 free by 33 seconds with a time of
11:22.42. She also placed second in the 500 free in 5:35.07 to
teammate Mallory Ryan, a freshman who won the
event in a time of 5:28.47. Rounding out a 500 free sweep was
junior Sara Mendoza (5:47.48).
Eliza Callwood was victorious
in the 100 breaststroke, winning by tenths of a second at 1:13.36.
Oxy divers had a solid showing, placing
one-two on both the 3-meter and 1-meter boards. Celeste
Faber won both events with scores of 242.40 and 199.85
while sophomore Marisa Pulcrano recorded scores of
166.65 and 186.10, respectively.
The Tigers will jump back in the pool on
Saturday, Nov. 15, on Homecoming day to compete against the Alumni
at Taylor Pool beginning at 10:00 a.m.
