LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2008) – For nine straight
games the Tigers have been victorious. Tonight Occidental College
defeated California Lutheran University 56-44 at Rush Gymnasium in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action and
gained sole possession of the top spot in the conference coupled
with a University of Redlands loss.
On senior night, Stacie
Roshon played all 40 minutes using an 18-point, seven
rebound performance to lead all players in each category.
Occidental opened the game shooting 51.9
percent from the field. They took a 25-15 lead with 7:59 to play in
the first half before the Regals chipped away to get within five.
Oxy took a 32-26 lead into the locker room behind 11 points from
Brianne Brown and nine from Roshon.
Oxy also had the edge rebounding with 28 to
the Regals' 20, although CLU grabbed 13 offensive boards in
the game. Stephanie Babij and Asha
Jordan each grabbed five rebounds for the Tigers and Babij
added a pair of blocks defensively. Ali Neill was the leading
rebounder in the game with 11 for CLU while she added four steals,
also a game high.
Sophomore point guard Britinee
Yasukochi led all players with six assists while she
poured in 11 points (4-for-4 from the line) as one of three players
in double figures for Oxy. Rounding out the scoring leaders was
Brown who finished with 16, playing just five minutes in the second
half. Laura Mohler and Roshon each dished out four
assists as well.
Overall The Tigers shot 46.8 percent from the
field adding an 11-for-13 night at the line, all coming in the
second half.
The Oxy defense in the second half held CLU to
a mere 19.4 field goal percentage as the Regals were just 6-for-31
from the field. Senior Mary Placido led the scoring for the CLU
with 12, while Katelyn Harrison added eight.
In other SCIAC action the University of La
Verne (16-8, 10-3) defeated the University of Redlands (17-7, 10-3)
68-53, leaving those two teams tied for second place.
Oxy travels to Whittier College on Saturday
for their final SCIAC game of the 2008 regular season. Tip-off will
take place at 5:00 p.m. before the men's teams battle it out
on the court starting at 7:30 p.m.
