LA VERNE, Calif. (April 19, 2008) – In
the final game of the women's water polo first round of play
the Occidental College Tigers defeated the University of La Verne
Leopards 9-5 on the road.
Danielle Montenegro led all
players with three goals while Sarah Boehler added
a pair for the Tigers.
Occidental found themselves trailing 2-0 after
the first period of play, but that quickly changed as the Tigers
out-scored the Leopards in the final three quarters of action. Oxy
used three second quarter goals to take a 3-2 lead at the break.
In the final two periods Oxy doubled up ULV
with two and four goals, allowing one and two goals, respectively.
Goalie Laura Simanonok made 11 saves in front of the
Tigers' cage and grabbed a pair of steals.
Rounding out the Oxy offense in the game were
Karie Nickle, Ashley Notti,
Perla Almaraz and Julie Monday.
Nickle added four assists and a pair of
steals.
Occidental improves to 15-12 and
hold a 3-3 SCIAC record.
April 25-27 the Tigers will travel to Thousand
Oaks, Calif. to play in the SCIAC Tournament hosted by Cal
Lutheran. On day one the # 4 Tigers will play the # 5 Bulldogs from
the University of Redlands at 5:00 p.m.
