LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 12, 2008) – Although the season
may not have opened as the Occidental men's soccer team had
intended, the Tigers left everything they had on the field in a 2-1
loss to non-conference Chapman University.
While both teams went into halftime scoreless, Chapman was first
to break the defensive struggle with a goal by Anthony Keto in the
54th minute of action. Occidental responded in the 65th minute when
James Kornfield found the back of the net for the first time in his
college career.
The cats battled through the next 22 minutes before Dalton
Sweeny put the Panthers in the lead for good with a goal in the
87th minute.
Chapman got off 15 shots while Oxy took 10, but sophomore goal
keeper Ian Powell tallied six saves to help
neutralize the advantage and keep the game close for the Tigers.
Senior forward Termain Tucker led the way for
the Tigers with four shots and was bested only by Sweeny who
notched five attempts.
Making his first appearance on the collegiate soccer scene was
midfielder Micah Farver.
Chapman improves to 4-1 on the season, while Occidental falls to
0-2. The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 17 as they
travel to Whittier College for the SCIAC season opener slated to
begin at 4:00 p.m.
