LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2008) – A
late offensive surge was just not quite enough for the Occidental
College Tigers as they fell 3-2 to the University of La Verne in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action
today on the Lower Soccer Field.
ULV jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the mid-way
mark on a goal from Ashley Cendejas. The Leos added another pair in
the second half from Leopards leading scorer Falisha Ramirez and
Ashley Vanga in the 58th and 64th minutes,
respectively to take a 3-0 lead.
Oxy clawed their way back into the game late
in the second half with back-to-back goals from the sophomore duo
of Jesi Sasaki and
Corinne Winkler.
In the 83rd minute Sasaki went
one-on-one past a defender to score her first goal of the season.
Winkler, the Tigers leading scorer on the season, followed three
minutes later with the final goal of the game on an assist from
Lauren Sawchenko.
The Tigers fired off 18 shots to the
Leos' eight in the loss. Tatiana Gutierrez made four saves
for ULV while Robin Feldman came away with three
saves for the black and orange.
Oxy falls to 1-3 on the season, 1-1 in SCIAC
while La Verne improves to 3-2, 2-0.
Occidental will be back on the field next
Saturday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer to take on the
Sagehens at 11:00 a.m.
