LA VERNE, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2009) – The Occidental College
men's soccer team got back on track this morning with a 2-0
road victory over the University of La Verne to snap a two-game
skid in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
action.
A scoreless game through the first half and much of the second
half, Occidental lit up the scoreboard in the 79th
minute when the Tigers' newest team member, Ben
Grime headered the ball into the net on an assist from
Reid Sakamoto for the ultimate winning goal.
Five minutes later, Will Moseley contributed to
the offense with an unassisted goal to give the Tigers some
insurance in the final minutes of the game.
In a game that looked slightly in favor of the Leos on paper,
the Tigers got the upper hand in the final box score. ULV out-shot
Oxy 12 to seven with five and four shots on goal, respectively. The
black and orange, however, were able to capitalize while their
defense came up strong to hold the host team scoreless. La Verne
also earned eight corner kicks to Occidental's two.
Andrew Larkin played all 90 minutes for the
Tigers, blocking five shots while his counterpart, Ryan Thompson,
saved two shots for ULV.
With the win, Occidental improves to 4-7 overall, 3-5 in SCIAC
play while ULV falls to 3-9, 3-5. The black and orange will return
to the Lower Soccer Field on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when they host the
5-6-2 University of Redlands Bulldogs sit at fourth in the SCIAC
with a 4-3-1 league record. Teams kick off at 4:00 p.m.
