LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2009) – For the first and
only time of the 2009 season the Occidental College women's
soccer team played on Patterson Field. Before a nice sized crowd on
a gorgeous sunny morning the Tigers defeated the visiting
University of La Verne Leopards 4-1 in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
While each team took 10 shots in the opening half, Occidental
had the upper hand, leading 3-1 at the intermission.
Freshman Whitney Roline lit up the scoreboard
first when she found the back of the net on an assist from
Elise Devereux in the 16th minute of
action. The Tigers then scored back-to-back unassisted goals by
Liz Martin and Alex Nicholson in
the 37th and 39th minutes, respectively.
Two minutes prior to the end of the first half La Verne got on
the board thanks to an Ashley Vanga pass to Falisha Ramirez who has
led the Leos' offense for the last two seasons.
Occidental, who maintained possession most of the game, added an
insurance goal nine minutes into the second half when Nicholson
found an open Rebecca Verstraete who scored for
the second straight game and her third of the season.
Junior Robin Feldman made eight saves in the
game, including on a penalty kick with :02 remaining in regulation.
She made five blocks in the first half and three in the second.
ULV goalie Brigette Jennings finished with 10 saves as the
Tigers fired off 24 shots, 14 on goal. Occidental earned six corner
kicks to La Verne's one.
With the win, Occidental improves to 6-4 overall, 4-3 in SCIAC
play while ULV falls to 2-7-1, 1-5-1. The black and orange will
return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 14 when they travel to the
University of Redlands to play the conference leading Bulldogs who
boast a 7-4 overall record and a 6-1 SCIAC mark. You can watch live game
