LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2009) – With four games
remaining in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference play for the men's soccer team, Occidental College
still has a chance to climb the ladder and earn a spot in the Post
Season tournament. Today on the Lower Soccer field the Tigers
encountered a set-back, however, in the form of the conference
leading Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens who earned a 1-0 victory despite a
well balanced match-up.
On paper the teams were about as evenly matched as could be with
PP taking 14 shots and the Tigers creating 12 chances with six and
four shots on goal, respectively. Deryk Lim led
the charge with three shots while Rob Riccardi, Ben
Murray and Rob Tuttlebee fired off two
apiece.
Each team earned six corner kicks, was called for one off sides
and the Sagehens had seven fouls to the Tigers' eight.
In front of the cage Andrew Larkin made two
saves, allowing the lone goal in the 20th minute while
Ian Powell recorded three saves in a scoreless
second half.
Pomona-Pitzer's Zach Burke was the lone scorer in the game
on three shots, two on goal, while PP goalie Rollie Thayer finished
with four saves.
Occidental falls to 4-10 overall, 3-10 in SCIAC while
Pomona-Pitzer remains atop the conference standings with an 11-3
record, 9-1 in league play. The Tigers will travel to Pasadena,
Calif. this Saturday, Oct. 24 to take on the Caltech Beavers at
11:00 a.m.
