CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 7, 2009) – They entered the
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post season
tournament as the No. 3 seeded team and after upsetting the No. 2
University of Redlands 2-0 on Thursday the women's soccer had
high hopes of repeating the feat this afternoon on Pritflaff Field.
Unfortunately for the black and orange, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the
No. 1 seeded team, and No. 2 team in the West Region, had other
plans, sending the Tigers home with a 1-0 defeat to close out the
2009 season.
While the teams battled back-and-forth throughout the 90 minute
match, CMS came out on top after a goal at the 14th
minute by Laura Hagen on an assist from Lizzie Van Buskirk.
Oxy had ample opportunities, but came up short. Leading the pack
today was freshman Lei Song who fired off three
shots. The Tiger combined for 11 shots, but the CMS goalie turned
away four that were on goal for the shutout.
CMS peppered Oxy goalie Robin Feldman with 12
first half shots, adding five in the final period of play to total
17. Of those 17, Feldman successfully diverted 10.
The Athenas earned six corner kicks, while Oxy had just one. The
offensive attack saw Liz Martin, Becca Verstraete
and Alex Nicholson take a pair of shots apiece.
While the teams both played their hearts out on the field, only
one could move on, thus today ultimately marked the final time that
four senior players will suit up for Occidental as the Tigers bid
farewell to Elise Devereux, Marci Kang,
Moe Kishida and Nicole Findlay.
Occidental finishes the season 10-7 and
claimed a third place finish in the SCIAC. CMS (15-2-2) claimed the
2009 SCIAC title and won the SCIAC Tournament to earn a ticket to
the NCAA Tournament that begins next week.
