LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Sept. 19, 2009) – Despite terrific
attempts by the Occidental College women's soccer team, the
Tigers were defeated 2-0 today by the University of Redlands
Bulldogs in their second Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference game of the season.
The fans witnessed, once again, tremendous efforts by defenders
Season Falkler-Rodriguez and Marci
Kang as well as the keeper, Robin
Feldman, but the quick Bulldog offense soon overpowered
the black and orange. The first goal, a dangerous throw in by
Redlands into Feldman's penalty box left the Oxy defense
distracted and the Bulldog forward shot the ball into the net
before the goalie had a chance to react.
Occidental's offense then responded with several shots of
their own. Freshman Leina'ala Song had three
shots, each on goal, including a one-on-one opportunity against the
Bulldogs' goalie. Song sped past the keeper to face the open
net only to confront a final defender to whom she lost the ball.
The Tigers had ample opportunities, but the ball was not
bouncing their way today. Elise Devereux, who
scored the winning goal against La Verne on Wednesday, could not
re-create the goal she scored against the Leopards although she had
a chance on a cross by mid-fielder Corrine Winkler
in front of an open net. The ball seemed destined to tie the game,
but a miscalculation left the game scoreless for the Tigers.
During the second half, the Tigers, exhausted and seemingly
desperate, turned away from the technique and skill that work in
their other victories this season. The tension and agitation
between both teams increased and in the 78th minute an
Oxy foul in front of their own goal just outside the penalty area
allowed the Bulldogs a free chance. UR capitalized on their free
kick, which was lifted over the wall and into the upper corner of
the goal securing the Bulldogs' 2-0 victory.
Redlands evens their overall record at 3-3 and remain undefeated
in SCIAC play at 2-0 while the Tigers fall to 2-3 (1-1 SCIAC). On
Wednesday, Sept. 23 Occidental will host Cal Lutheran University
(4-1, 0-1 SCIAC) at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field.
