LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2010) - In the Tigers' final
non-conference match-up of the season, Occidental College saw its
five game unbeaten streak come to an end at the hands of the
visiting UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs who defeated the home squad 1-0
on the Lower Soccer Field this afternoon.
While the game was scoreless at the half, UCSC controlled the
momentum of the game throughout, outshooting the Black and Orange
18-6. In the first half the Slugs produced eight opportunities to
the Tigers' one and added 10 more in the second half while Oxy
fired off just five.
The game was scoreless for the first 73:59 when the Slugs' Matt
Fondy crossed the ball in front of the Tigers' net where Aaron
Surry was able to punch the ball into the back of the net marking
the only scoring of the day.
Each team earned one corner kick in the opening stanza and UCSC
tallied five to Oxy's four in the final period of play.
Oxy had two opportunities late in the game. Both saw just a
little bit too much leg, as the ball landed just out of reach of
players near the net on both occasions.
Ben Murray managed to take the only Oxy shot on
goal, allowing Matt Pereira his only save of the day for Santa
Cruz.
Guarding the cage for the Tigers today was Chris
Liotta who turned away 10 Slugs' shots on goal.
Twenty-one different Tigers got in on the action today.
Occidental (4-5-2, 4-2-1 SCIAC) will return to SCIAC play on
Wednesday, Oct. 13 when they travel to the University of La Verne
to play the Leopards on Ben Hines Field. Kick off is slated for
4:00 p.m.
