CLAREMONT, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2010) – On the road today in
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, the
Occidental College Tigers fell, 1-0, to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Stags who currently hold the second spot in the conference
standings.
Occidental, who had enjoyed a five-game unbeaten streak, has
dropped its last three matches, unable to score a goal.
The lone goal of the game came in the first minute of the game
when CMS's David Taylor scored unassisted just 28 seconds in.
The remaining 89:32 was scoreless on both
sides.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (8-2-2, 6-1-2 SCIAC) clearly controlled
the pace of the game today as they fired off 23 shots to the
Tigers' nine. Five of those nine were on target, however CMS
goalie Joseph Swartley turned each Oxy attempt away. Oxy goalie
Chris Liotta recorded 12 saves in 90 minutes of
action.
Leading the Tigers' offensive attack were Marcus
Brandford and Ben Murray who were each
credited with a pair of shots.
Both defenses worked hard throughout with CJ
Grigoriadis, Doug Pentland, Kosa Goucher-Lambert and
Rob Riccardi manning Oxy's backfield
today.
The Stags earned five corner kicks while Oxy had two corner kick
opportunities.
Occidental (4-7-2, 4-3-2) is clinging to fourth place in the
SCIAC standings. Wednesday, Oct. 20 the Tigers will host the
Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (3-9, 3-6) at 4:00 p.m.
on the Lower Soccer Field.
