Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2010) – Less than a week after
the Occidental College men's soccer team defeated Whittier
College 1-0 in double over time in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on the Lower Soccer, the
Poets reversed the roles on their home field today, defeating the
Tigers 1-0 in overtime.
After 90 minutes there was no score, sending
the teams into an extra frame. Whittier controlled the pace of the
game, firing off 23 shots to the Tigers' seven, keeping the
Oxy keepers busy. Chris Liotta got the start
and saved five shots in the first 41 plus minutes before being
replaced by Ian
Powell, who finished with a pair of saves.
At the 98:30 mark WC's Jonathan Palomino
split a pair of Oxy defenders and lofted the ball just out of
Powell's reach to score on an assist by Adolfo Santos.
Whittier earned 11 corner kicks to the
Tigers' one, which came at the start of overtime.
Leading the pack offensively today was
freshman Marcus
Brandford, who accounted for four of the seven shots with
one coming on goal. James Kornfield and
Rob Riccardi
also recorded shots on goal in the game with Nitzan Sherman rounding
out the attempts.
Occidental (5-9-2, 5-5-2 SCIAC) will travel to
the University of Redlands (10-2-2, 9-1-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 27 to
play the second place Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
