Tigers suffer overtime loss

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2010) – Less than a week after the Occidental College men's soccer team defeated Whittier College 1-0 in double over time in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on the Lower Soccer, the Poets reversed the roles on their home field today, defeating the Tigers 1-0 in overtime.

After 90 minutes there was no score, sending the teams into an extra frame. Whittier controlled the pace of the game, firing off 23 shots to the Tigers' seven, keeping the Oxy keepers busy. Chris Liotta got the start and saved five shots in the first 41 plus minutes before being replaced by Ian Powell, who finished with a pair of saves.

At the 98:30 mark WC's Jonathan Palomino split a pair of Oxy defenders and lofted the ball just out of Powell's reach to score on an assist by Adolfo Santos.

Whittier earned 11 corner kicks to the Tigers' one, which came at the start of overtime.

Leading the pack offensively today was freshman Marcus Brandford, who accounted for four of the seven shots with one coming on goal. James Kornfield and Rob Riccardi also recorded shots on goal in the game with Nitzan Sherman rounding out the attempts.

Occidental (5-9-2, 5-5-2 SCIAC) will travel to the University of Redlands (10-2-2, 9-1-2) on Wednesday, Oct. 27 to play the second place Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m.
